Only the sites grounds have been open for public access which can be visited by ferry from Manhattans Battery Park or New Jerseys Liberty State Park ferry terminals. The Statue of Liberty has been closed to the public since September 11, 2001, is set to partially reopen in August 2004. The reopening will allow visitors to tour the base of the statue, which houses a museum, but access to the statue itself will remain off limits. |
